Educational Qualifications B.A.(Hon's), M.A. in Economics from Presidency College, University of Madras in 1947

Joined Indian Police Service in 1949 and posted to the erstwhile Hyderabad state and after the reorganization of states, allotted to Andhra Pradesh.

Served as Superintendent of Police in the District of Nizamabad, Raichur and Guntur and as Dy. Commissioner of Police in the twin city of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

Joined Intelligence Bureau in 1962 as Assistant Director. As I.B. Officer served in Sikkim and Bhutan during 1963-67 as OSD and Advisor respectively.

Served as Deputy Director and Joint Director in I.B. Head Quarter 1967 to 1980.

Served as Director, Intelligence Bureau in Feb. 1980 and held the post till Aug., 1983.

Posted as Lt. Governor, Arunachal Pradesh in August 1983, the first ever I.P./I.P.S. Officer to be appointed to a Constitutional post.

Posted as Governor of Sikkim in Nov. 1985 and held the post till March 1989.

Posted as Governor of West Bengal in March 1989. In Feb. 1990 resigned the post, along with all other Governors, as per the advice of President Shri R. Venkataraman.
